​NFWF worked throughout FY2011 under a U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) grant on implementation of the Walker Basin Restoration Program, a watershed-scale initiative whose primary purpose is to restore and maintain Walker Lake, an at-risk, natural desert terminal lake in Nevada.  During FY2011, NFWF focused on continuing to acquire water from willing sellers and began the legal process to protect the acquired water instream for the benefit of Walker Lake.  NFWF provided grants to the local conservation districts to revegetate retired farmland and to reduce the overall water footprint while continuing to support agricultural production in the Basin.  NFWF continues to work on grants to support water leasing, water conservation, land stewardship, decision support for water acquisitions, and associated research.  Partners include the University of Nevada-Reno, the Walker River Irrigation District, the Walker River Paiute Tribe, state agencies, local governments, farmers and ranchers, and others.
