For a select set of initiatives, NFWF and its partners have developed business plans approved by our Board of Directors and long-range strategies developed by internal and external experts. Select a program below to see its description and learn about its strategy.
  • American Oystercatcher

    NFWF's American Oystercatcher Conservation Program aims to increase the Atlantic and Gulf Coast populations of this species by 30 percent over the next 10 years. 

  • Apache Trout
    NFWF's Apache Trout initiative aims to increase the abundance and distribution of Apache trout in the U.S.
  • Attwater's Prairie-Chicken
    NFWF's Attwater’s Prairie-Chicken Conservation Program seeks to re-establish habitat so that this once-widespread species can again become viable.
  • Bog Turtle
    NFWF’s Bog Turtle Conservation Program focuses on activities in the northeastern U.S to protect one of the smallest turtles in the world.
  • Chesapeake Bay
    The goal of NFWF's Chesapeake Bay Business Plan is to recover key species, restore the habitats and water quality of the Bay.
  • Coral Reefs
    NFWF's Coral Reef Conservation Initiative addresses declines in both the quantity and quality of the world’s coral reef ecosystems.
  • Early Successional Forest
    NFWF's Early Successional Forest Initiative focuses on establishing viable populations of the American Woodcock, Golden-winged Warbler, and some two dozen additional imperiled species that nest in young, regenerating forests in eastern North America.
  • Eastern Brook Trout
    NFWF’s Eastern Brook Trout Conservation Program works to improve habitat and water quality in the mid-Atlantic region to reintroduce Eastern brook trout and reconnect isolated populations. 
  • Great Migrations and Crucial Corridors
    NFWF’s Great Migrations and Crucial Corridors Conservation Program aims to preserve North America's most important wildlife migrations by targeting critical bottlenecks and key linkages. 
  • Gunnison Sage-Grouse
    NFWF's Gunnison Sage-Grouse Conservation Program works with private landowners to increase the habitat available for this rare grassland species.
  • Hawaiian Forest Birds
    NFWF's Hawaiian Forest Bird Conservation Program supports implementation of sustainable and cost-effective strategies to restore three endangered species: the Palila, Maui Parrotbill, and Nihoa Millerbird.
  • Kirtland's Warbler
    NFWF's Kirtland’s Warbler Initiative is a public-private partnership for the conservation of Kirtland’s Warbler that, should the species be removed from the Endangered Species List, would provide financial and public support for maintaining its viability.
  • Lahontan Cutthroat Trout
    NFWF’s Lahontan Cutthroat Trout Conservation Program works to protect and sustain Lahontan cutthroat populations.
  • Lower Klamath Basin
    NFWF's Lower Klamath Basin initiative works to stabilize and increase the populations of Klamath River Coho salmon and restore biologically viable populations. 
  • New England Cottontail
    NFWF’s New England Cottontail Conservation Program funds conservation activities for the cottontail rabbit in the states of Maine and New Hampshire.
  • River Herring
    NFWF's River Herring Conservation Program implements strategies to reverse declines in the species and create sustainable populations. 
  • Russian River Coho
    NFWF’s Russian River Coho Conservation Program works to restore coho in the Russian River by changing traditional water management practices to improve stream conditions.
  • Sea Turtles
    NFWF's Sea Turtle Conservation Initiative works to restore  leatherbacks, Kemp’s ridleys, loggerheads, and hawksbills in the Northwest Atlantic and leatherbacks, loggerheads and hawksbills in the Eastern Pacific. 
  • Seabirds
    NFWF's Seabird Conservation Program works to improve the conservation status of seabirds in the Caribbean and Pacific, including albatrosses, shearwaters, petrels, storm petrels, tropicbirds, alcids, terns and others. 
  • Short Grass Prairie
    NFWF's Short Grass Prairie Conservation Program supports habitat restoration and other conservation actions for the Lesser Prairie-Chicken, an “umbrella” species for numerous other grassland birds.
  • Sierra Nevada Meadow Restoration
    NFWF's Sierra Nevada Meadow Restoration Conservation Program replenishes the health and biodiversity of mountain meadow regions. 
  • Sky Island Grasslands
    NFWF’s Sky Islands Grasslands Conservation Program works to restore high quality grasslands, ecosystem functioning, and self-sustaining populations of native species in the Southwest.
  • Southeast Native Bass
    NFWF's Southeast Native Bass Conservation Program focuses on conserving Guadalupe bass in Texas, Redeye bass in Savannah, and Shoal bass in Chattahoochee, Flint and Chipola Rivers. 
  • Southeastern Grasslands
    NFWF's Southeastern Grasslands Conservation Program works to restore grassland habitats in the southeastern United States.
  • Upper Colorado River Native Fishes
    NFWF's Upper Colorado River Native Fishes Conservation Program works to stabilize and increase populations of the Colorado River cutthroat trout, bluehead and flannelmouth sucker, and roundtail chub. 
  • Upper Klamath Basin
    NFWF's Upper Klamath Basin initiative works to restore watershed and water flow conditions for federally-listed Lost River sucker and shortnose sucker, as well as state sensitive redband trout.
