Covanta, working with NFWF, NOAA and Schnitzer Steel Industries, Inc., provides a no-cost option for fishermen to dispose of old, derelict or unusable fishing gear through the Fishing for Energy program. The program also works with state and local agencies, community and industry groups, and local ports to foster solutions to prevent gear loss and impact of derelict gear to marine habitats and wildlife. Collected gear is either recycled or converted into clean, renewable electricity for local communities at Covanta’s Energy-from-Waste facilities. Since 2008, nearly 3 million pounds of marine debris have been collected.
