The Puerto Rico Seagrass Fund was created to implement seagrass conservation projects in Puerto Rico.
NFWF and the Interagency Advisory Team (“IAT”) will select one or more project managers to conduct an initial assessment of the general condition of seagrass beds in the shallow, nearshore waters between Guánica (Punta Jorobado) and Santa Isabel (Punta Petrona). The assessment will focus on identifying seagrass protection and restoration opportunities based on observed impacts to seagrass, and recommend priority conservation locations and strategies.
Following the completion of the initial assessment, NFWF will conduct a second request for proposals. Through this process, the Fund will competitively award grants for the most cost-effective seagrass protection and restoration projects in the targeted geography.
Management of the Fund is conducted by NFWF in consultation/coordination with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, the National Marine Fisheries Service, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Caribbean Ecological Services Field Office, who together comprise the IAT.
