Project Title: Working Lands for Wildlife: Improving New Mexico's Southwestern Willow Flycatcher Habitat

Description:

This project will leverage existing activities and technical capacity at Audubon New Mexico (ANM) to maximize technical assistance for NRCS staff, New Mexican landowners and New Mexican irrigation districts. The requested funding will allow for the hiring of a full-time field conservation professional who, along with ANM staff, will provide New Mexican NRCS offices with a strategic framework for delivering quality Southwestern Willow Fly Catchers (SWFL) conservation projects. ANM will provide direct assistance to New Mexico’s Working Lands for Wildlife Program and associated Farm Bill Conservation Programs that benefit SWFL conservation. This proposal will allow for the development of a strong foundation for NRCS SWFL conservation that will deliver improved plans and quality habitat well beyond the three years of the grant.

Southwestern Willow Flycatcher habitat is throughout New Mexico.In New Mexico, the species is known to primarily nest along the Rio Grande, Rio Chama, Gila River, as well as smaller nesting occurrences along the Zuni, Blue, San Francisco, San Juan and Coyote Creek drainages.
