Conservation Program(s):
Chesapeake Bay Small Watershed Grants
Project Title: Demonstrating Sustainable Farm Operations at the Augusta County Correctional Center
Organization:
Headwaters Soil and Water Conservation District
Project ID:
0603.20.069934
Description:

Large network of partners to address sediment issues on a state owned property, Augusta County Correctional Center. Funding will allow partners to install just under 5 miles of stream fencing, improve 350 acres of livestock pasture management, and establish 35 acres of riparian grass buffers and 16 acres of riparian forest buffers on a brood cow agriculture operation at the Commonwealth’s Augusta County Correctional Center. These multiple conservation practices will improve sustainability of the farm operation and advance measurable progress toward the Little Calfpasture River local Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) for sediment and Virginia’s Phase III Watershed Implementation Plan for the Chesapeake Bay. These water quality improvements will increase habitat integrity for the Eastern Brook Trout among other native species in the watershed.
