FedEx Volunteers Dig In With EarthSmart Outreach

Fourteen urban areas across the U.S. will be a little greener this year, thanks to the muscle of more than 600 FedEx team members participating in Earth Day projects in their communities.

Working alongside local nonprofit groups to plant trees, clean up streams and build nature trails, the FedEx volunteers are part of the FedEx EarthSmart Outreach program. The relationship with NFWF, now in its fourth year, addresses environmental challenges in cities from Boston to Los Angeles, and continues the FedEx commitment to making communities healthier and cleaner.

EarthSmart Outreach has grown from six locations in 2010 to 14 this year. Projects are funded by FedEx and supported by additional funds from NFWF’s federal partners. In 2013, a total of more than $425,000 will be matched with grants from local municipalities and agencies to yield more than $1 million in anticipated support for critical environmental actions.

From now through July, FedEx EarthSmart Outreach projects will take place in Indianapolis, Memphis, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Dallas, Colorado Spring, Chicago, Miami, Newark, Washington, D.C. and Boston.

Many of the parks, waterways, beaches and wetlands being restored by the projects provide havens for wildlife in the midst of urban areas. They also offer residents places to enjoy and learn about nature.

“These EarthSmart Outreach projects allow FedEx team members to contribute to and help improve the communities where they live and work,” said Mitch Jackson, vice president, environmental affairs and sustainability, FedEx Corp.
