Description:

The Zoological Society of San Diego dba San Diego Zoo Global is implementing an intensive captive propagation and reintroduction program for the ‘Alala (Hawaiian Crow). This effort is being conducted in collaboration with the ‘Alala Working Group, which includes local and national agencies, landowners, and additional partners. Approximately 15 ‘Alala juveniles are being reared in a captive breeding program each year and at least 11-13 juveniles will be released into intensively restored and managed native forest habitat following techniques described in a thoroughly vetted and peer-reviewed reintroduction plan. We are grateful to the NFWF for its strong and essential partnership that enabled the first year of ‘Alala reintroduction efforts in 2016. This conservation success would not have been possible without the support from NFWF. With additional support, the successful captive propagation and reintroduction of this iconic and charismatic Hawaiian species will be able to continue.
