NFWF Grant Profile

Conservation Program(s):
Southern California Forests and Watersheds
Project Title: Improving Pre- and Post-Wildfire Prioritization of Restoration Activities, Information Transfer and Performance Accounting in the Los Padres National Forest
Organization:
TerrainWorks
Project ID:
0806.17.055686
Description:

We will apply advanced geo-spatial tools in the Zaca, Piru and Jesusita fires to create a quantitative, consistent, and replicable method to improve prioritizing restoration activities, involving aquatic habitats, riparian conditions, post-fire erosion and roads. A pre-fire analysis will cover the remainder of the LPNF, for prioritizing pre-fire thinning, prescribed burning and road work, to maximize benefits to aquatic and riparian environments. Conservation outcomes include focusing restoration dollars and efforts at priority locations, maximizing recovery. The project will address NFWF’s overarching goal: utilize USFS’s Watershed Condition Framework to guide restoration targets, predict restoration effectiveness to quantify and rank prioritization, and couple those to a performance accounting system, to raise WCF’s existing condition classifications, based on future restoration activities. All map products and prioritization will be housed in an easy to use online browser.

Award Amount:
$127439.97
Location:
The project covers the Zaca, Piru and Jesusita fire areas (313,000 acres) and the remainder of the LPNF (1.6 million acres), for a total of 1.9 million acres.
