Project Title: Shorebird Harvest in the Caribbean
Organization:
BirdsCaribbean
Project ID:
0101.17.055762
Description:

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation's parent Business Plan for the Atlantic Flyway Shorebird Initiative (AFSI) identified harvest as one of four major threats to shorebird survival in the Flyway. Since 2013, the AFSI Shorebird Hunting Working Group has been leading efforts to achieve a sustainable harvest in the Flyway and has a goal of reducing harvest pressure by at least 30% by 2025. Seven major strategies were developed to achieve this goal and include: 1) assess biological and social aspects of harvest, 2) develop policies and regulations, 3) strengthen law enforcement and monitor compliance, 4) improve outreach and communication, 5) establish and maintain no-shooting
reserves, 6) develop incentives to not hunt, and 7) conduct basic shorebird research and monitoring. The current request to NFWF focuses on understanding and assessing the shorebird harvest on Guadeloupe.
