A large number of freshwater wetlands within the project location were overwashed with the storm surge from hurricane Harvey, raising salinities and making them unusable for a number of wildlife species. The project location serves as the primary wintering habitat for whooping cranes and a number of other important waterbirds.
During the restoration phase, SABP will repair freshwater well infrastructure on sites with wind damage to solar panels and piping. Some freshwater wetlands and ponds experienced dam and levee erosion will require reworking. SABP will also add new freshwater wells and water control structures on the highest priority sites.
