The ridge of the Sierra Madre Mountains on the edge of the Zaca Fire scar supports more than 1,500 acres of grasslands within what are called "potreros". These include Santa Barbara Potrero, Logan Potrero, Round Potrero, Salisbury Potrero, Pine Corral Potrero, and Montgomery Potrero. These potreros have been grazed by livestock for more than 100 years. We will explore the feasibility of working with the cattlemen to use cattle to restore breeding bird habitat. Our hypothesis is that a more intensively managed grazing regime will support native grassland, increase breeding bird populations, and help recover the populations of several declining bird species.
