Project Title: Croatan Ranger District Red-cockaded Woodpecker (RCW) Recovery Effort – Hurricane Florence
Organization:
U.S. Forest Service
Project ID:
1908.18.063307
Description:

Install 150 artificial cavity inserts on the Croatan National Forest in North Carolina to replace the red-cockaded woodpecker (RCW) cavity trees destroyed by Hurricane Florence and expand their availability in order to help stabilize the RCW population. The loss of cavity trees causes the birds to have to roost without the protection of the cavity, increasing predation risk and exposure to inclement weather. This project will also complete field assessments for the remaining known RCW clusters on the National Forest to determine the extent of damage and additional recovery needs.
