NFWF Announces Release of the National Coastal Resilience Fund 2019 Request for Proposals
The National Coastal Resilience Fund will award up to $29 million in grant funding to enhance coastal communities' natural defenses against severe weather and flooding
WASHINGTON D.C. (April 3 2019) –The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) today announced the release of the 2019 Request for Proposals for the National Coastal Resilience Fund (NCRF) which provides grant funding to restore increase and strengthen natural infrastructure to protect coastal communities while also enhancing habitats for fish and wildlife.
This year Congress has again provided funding for Title IX of the National Oceans and Coastal Security Act allowing grants to be awarded through the NCRF a public-partnership between NFWF NOAA Shell Oil Company and TransRe.

The NCRF will invest up to $29 million in projects that restore or expand natural features such as coastal marshes and wetlands dune and beach systems oyster and coral reefs mangroves coastal forests and rivers and barrier islands that help minimize the impacts of storms rising sea levels and other extreme events. Projects funded will be located within the coastal areas of U.S. coastal states including the Great Lakes states. U.S. territories including Puerto Rico the U.S. Virgin Islands American Samoa Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands are also eligible for funding support.
Building on the significant coordination and planning that has already been done in many of the nation's coastal communities and recognizing the need for action the partnership will focus investments on projects that have been prioritized within existing community or regional resilience plans. Priority will be given to:
- Project Preliminary Design and Site Assessment
- Project Final Design and Permitting
- Project Implementation and Monitoring
Funding is available for innovative projects that seek to reshape thinking on how to protect communities in light of projected environmental stressors that may go beyond traditional habitat restoration alone to develop truly novel approaches to address these challenges. Each investment will seek to incorporate and support adaptation to the projected future conditions.
