Conservation through Partnerships: Sustain Our Great Lakes
The Great Lakes provide more than just stunning vistas—they're a lifeline for our planet. Home to more than 20 percent of the world's surface freshwater, 10,000 miles of shoreline and 30,000 islands, this landscape provides drinking water to tens of millions and sanctuary to more than 200 globally rare species. The Great Lakes also drive a robust economy, supporting shipping, industry, tourism and outdoor recreation.
The Sustain Our Great Lakes program brings together public and private organizations to conserve this vital ecosystem. From 2006 to 2023, the program has awarded a total of $128.6 million to 496 grants. Grantees matches SOGL’s investment with an additional $155 million, bringing the total on-the-ground conservation impact to more than $283.6 million. Some of the important outcomes generated by this investment include over 2,560 miles of stream reconnected for fish access, 53,160 acres of wetland and associated upland habitat restored, and 346 million gallons of stormwater storage added.
